Starting in June 2025, the Spectacular Follies will shine a spotlight on the incredible performers who bring the Spectacular Follies to life—celebrating the talent, stories, and spirit of our beloved cast. From show-stopping numbers to backstage camaraderie, these are the faces (and hearts) behind the magic.
We begin our series with a dynamic pair who have been part of the Follies family since the very beginning: Rodney and Beth Pirtle. Known for their energy, elegance, and unmistakable charm, the Pirtles have captivated audiences on stage and inspired fellow performers behind the scenes. Join us as we take a closer look at their journey, favorite memories, and the moments that make the Follies feel like home.
When the Spectacular Follies first took the stage in 2008, Rodney and Beth Pirtle were already stars in the making. Not just performers, the Pirtles were foundational to the show’s creation. Rodney was deeply involved in imagining and launching what would become a beloved annual tradition. “I was in on the conceptualization and implementation,” he says proudly, recalling the excitement and energy of building something new with fellow founders like Ned Startzel and Mark Carroll.
Beth, who joined alongside Rodney, was motivated in part by their community work through Rotary International and the chance to be part of something special. “I joined with Rodney,” she says, noting how their shared passion for service and performance made the Follies a perfect fit. Their commitment to making the show thrive was immediate—and personal.
Neither of them remembers a traditional audition for that very first production. “I don’t recall auditioning for the first show!” Rodney laughs, a sentiment echoed by Beth, who still vividly remembers her first time stepping into the spotlight at the Eisemann Center. “Being in the beautiful Eisemann Performing Arts Center was thrilling,” she recalls.
Through the years, the Pirtles have seen their roles evolve. “I no longer do dance numbers,” Rodney admits with a smile, while Beth reflects, “As I’ve gotten older, I am in fewer acts.” Yet both remain firmly involved, and their dedication has never waned. “The Follies has been a significant part of my life for nearly two decades,” says Rodney. Beth adds, “Knowing I have helped the Spectacular Follies grow and succeed means so much to me.”
When asked about favorite memories, both light up. Rodney fondly recalls standout moments like Ned’s boundless enthusiasm and Ebby Halliday’s generous $30,000 “gift” that helped bring early productions to life. Beth treasures the experience of being a showgirl: “Wearing the beautiful costumes and headdresses… it made me feel like a queen!”
Their memories are rich with humor and heart. Rodney recalls one particular Saturday matinee performance where he “wobbled” and then standing next to musical director Andy Michlin’s piano for the evening show. Andy, with his sarcastic wit, later commented “I had to fake interest in your performance.”
Their involvement hasn’t just been about performing—it’s been about building a legacy. From day one, Rodney and Beth helped shape the Follies into the vibrant, intergenerational celebration it is today. Their story reminds us that passion, creativity, and a little bit of sparkle can go a long way—and that growing older doesn’t mean stepping out of the spotlight.
