October 2025, we were proud to feature Frances Dempsey, a true pioneer in the history of the Spectacular Follies.
From the very first planning meetings alongside founder Ned Startzel to her many years performing with the beloved Dallas Tap Dazzlers, Frances has been a steady source of energy, creativity, and joy. Her dedication helped the Follies take root in Dallas, and her memories highlight not only the fun of being on stage but also the friendships and laughter behind the curtain.
The Spectacular Follies has always been about more than costumes, lights, and songs — it has been about people who believe in the power of performance to bring joy. Few embody that spirit more than Frances Dempsey. As the founder, director, and primary choreographer of the Dallas Tap Dazzlers — and a longtime performer herself — Frances has seen the Follies grow from an ambitious idea to a cherished tradition. Her story is filled with humor, heartfelt memories, and a reminder that staying active and sharing your gifts is the true secret to longevity.
Frances’s journey with the Follies began with a phone call from founder Ned Startzel, who invited her to join the very first planning committee. Ned had heard about her group, the Dallas Tap Dazzlers, and wanted them on board. “We were just eager to see the Follies succeed,” Frances remembers. She even served as Secretary on the inaugural Board, helping to lay the groundwork for what would become the show we know and love today.
In those early years, the Dazzlers performed without live singers, relying instead on their well-rehearsed routines. Later changes brought new challenges — and plenty of growth. “When you’ve perfected a routine, it’s not easy to suddenly adjust the music,” she laughs. “But we always found a way to make it work.”
Ask Frances about her favorite memories, and her face lights up. One highlight was performing a Vaudeville comedy act with Ned himself. “He was such a talent — he gave everything he had to entertain audiences. It was pure FUN!” Of course, dancing with the Dazzlers is at the top of her list, too.
And then there are the backstage moments — like the time she was sitting with Lillie Madison, admiring her beautiful skin. Lillie quickly replied, “Don’t you know black don’t crack?” Frances says she nearly fell out of her chair laughing!
But for Frances, the magic of the Follies has always been about more than the stage. “I’ve met so many wonderful friends through the Follies. I’ll remember them always,” she shares. Watching fellow seniors blossom into performers has been especially meaningful: “To see them come out of their shell and make the audience smile — that’s the best part.”
Though health challenges have kept her from performing in recent years, Frances’s heart remains with the Follies. She encourages the Dazzlers to keep going, and she has advice for anyone considering stepping on stage later in life: “Keep going as long as you physically can. One day you won’t be able to.” It’s a reminder that matches the Dazzlers’ motto: If you rest, you rust.
When asked what legacy she hopes the Follies will leave, Frances doesn’t hesitate: “That audiences will always remember the joy and excitement they felt, and that it inspires others to share the talents God has given them.”
Frances, thank you for your dedication, your laughter, and the light you’ve shared with the Follies family. You’ve helped make the show what it is today — and your sparkle continues to inspire us all.
